How safe is your Facebook Messenger?

Desk Report: An ‘article’ has been published in ‘Forbes’ magazine about the security vulnerability of Facebook Messenger. Cyber security expert ‘Zach Doffman’ has highlighted the serious vulnerability related to Messenger’s security.

That said, if you’re one of Facebook Messenger’s 1.3 billion users, one of the reasons you should be leaving the platform is right now. However, various media outlets are reporting that new security has been added to the platform. But there is a huge gap here, which makes it even more risky. This raises new questions about Facebook and its secretive backend systems.

While Apple’s controversial CSAM update and backtracking headlines are often in the media, Facebook has quietly made a huge change to Messenger. This has a more serious impact on your security and privacy than what Apple did.

Messenger’s biggest problem is its lack of end-to-end encryption. End-to-end encryption (ETUEE) is a communication system where only the communicators can read each other’s messages. In principle, it does not give the right to know the secrets of telecom service providers, internet providers, and even communication service providers. Messenger lacks security in this regard.

Now, after a few years of delay, Facebook is expressing disappointment in this regard. The company says they finally see some hope in solving this long-awaited issue. There are two major problems with this. If you want to continue using Messenger, you should know them.

User Collection Business

We all know that Facebook is a data-collection business. The company is now also doing user collection business. Just look at the numbers to understand this. Facebook has four apps. They are Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. They are installed on more than 3 billion devices. Among all other apps, only ‘TikTok’ has managed to reach this height. Think about it for a moment.

But these users are not the same. Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram are tightly connected. The main platform and its photo-sharing subsidiary (supplementary) apps give you some lessons from their mistakes with algorithmic timelines. In this case, when you see the ‘Exit the App’ message, do something else instead.

Meanwhile, Messenger and Instagram DMs (direct messages) let you connect to your social graph. Connect all that interesting content to everyone you know in one place.

WhatsApp is different in this regard – WhatsApp has no such algorithmic content to drag you, and no scrolling time limit. There are just a bunch of chats where some users send relative messages to each other. Facebook is desperate to pile on metadata and social graphs to push advertising and business services. But WhatsApp is a bit different in this regard.

So what does Facebook need to do with Messenger and Instagram DMS ‘end-to-end encryption’ to match WhatsApp’s security? Let’s be clear, you should use a fully encrypted messenger app. However, this does not mean that all messengers are fully encrypted. Or all encrypted messenger apps have a silver bullet to keep everything private and secure.

Many security professionals are adamant that end-to-end encryption should be ubiquitous. Digital falsification is very dangerous. “Messenger has made the right decision to emphasize the importance of end-to-end encryption in all communications. This will increase trust in this platform, no doubt.

Yes, that can be agreed upon – but remember that Facebook Messenger is completely different. It is part of a social media platform, which collects a large amount of observational information about users when they use the platform; It’s also used by kids and helps users find people they know and then start communicating with them – you just can’t do that on WhatsApp or Signal.

Here’s a simple one – if my child uses social media, I certainly don’t want a stranger to find my child, view their profile, and secretly exchange messages with them. Facebook says they have the technology to prevent it. But don’t make fun of that anymore, enough is enough. I can no longer trust Facebook’s assurances. Because the issue of child abuse has already come to the fore through Facebook Messenger encryption.

Facebook says Messenger encryption will not reduce its ability to identify child abuse on the platform. But internally the company doesn’t seem so sure. Earlier this year, Facebook’s head of global policy management was asked whether reported incidents of child abuse would be “disappeared” or deleted with encryption. He then said, “I hope the numbers will come down. If content is shared and we don’t have access to that content, we can’t report it if it’s something we can’t see.”

As part of this, Facebook now says it will give users certain rights, allowing users to decide who can access their chat list, who goes to their request folder, and who can’t message them at all so that users can prevent unwanted interactions. can But how much will this matter be protected in the case of children?
